Energy Geotechnology: The Evolving Role of Geotechnical Engineers in the Energy Transition
Energy sustains human progress. Growing demand, environmental constraints, and the anticipated transition toward lower-carbon energy systems will reshape the energy landscape. The subsurface is central to this transformation: it provides energy resources, hosts critical infrastructure, offers new possibilities for energy storage, and serves as a repository for energy-related waste. Consequently, subsurface processes govern the design and long-term performance of many energy projects. Yet these emerging applications challenge our traditional understanding of geomaterials and the processes that govern their behavior.
